Antique Furniture Restoration
Antique furniture restoration involves cleaning the piece of furniture thoroughly and performing repairs, which can be as simple as gluing table legs back in the joint or replacing missing hardware such as handles and casters.
Specific repairs performed by Griffin's Refinishing:
- Splits and Holes — Cracks and splits are a common problem on wooden furniture, especially if the piece is old or is excessively used. Our restoration techniques can remove these problems.
- Scratch Repair — The first step to scratch restoration is to determine what type of scratch it is. If the scratch stays the same color as the rest of the furniture and can only be seen from certain angles, then it is in the finish. If the scratch is a lighter color than the surrounding wood then it has gone through the finish and into the wood. In this case, it will need to be coloured and waxed to make it disappear.
- Heat and Water Marks — These marks are caused by moisture getting inside the wax on the wooden surface, resulting in the bond between the wax and the wood breaking. It is disheartening to see your furniture in this condition, but methods can be applied to remove the stains from your wooden furniture.
- Burn Marks — Burn damage can be removed from furniture so long as the burn does not extend further than the surface or extensively affect the wood. The most common type of burn on wood furniture is from cigarettes; burns on furniture can range from minor singes to deep char.
